Description

This Overnight Crème Brûlée French Toast Recipe is an indulgent, make-ahead breakfast casserole featuring caramelized brown sugar, rich custard-soaked bread, and a golden baked finish. Perfect for holidays, brunch parties, or cozy weekends.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf challah or brioche bread, sliced (about 1-inch thick)

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter

  • 1 cup brown sugar

  • 2 tablespoons light corn syrup (or maple syrup)

  • 5 large eggs

  • 1 1/2 cups half-and-half (or full-fat milk)

  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • Optional: 1 tablespoon brandy or orange zest for flavor

Instructions

  1. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar and corn syrup until smooth. Pour mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.

  2. Layer bread slices tightly on top of the caramel layer.

  3. Whisk eggs, half-and-half, vanilla, salt, and optional flavorings in a large bowl. Pour evenly over bread.

  4. Cover and refrigerate overnight (minimum 8 hours).

  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Let dish come to room temp.

  6. Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes or until golden and puffed.

  7. Let cool 5 minutes. Slice, serve warm, and top with fresh berries, whipped cream, or powdered sugar.

Notes

  • Use day-old bread for better custard absorption
  • Maple syrup or honey can replace corn syrup.
  • Add cinnamon or nutmeg to the custard for a seasonal twist.
